NCIS
NCIS is the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, responsible for crimes by and against members of the United States Navy and US Marine Corps. The team of NCIS agents introduced in Season 1 is led by former Marine Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a tough no-nonsense leader and interrogator. The team also includes ex-homicide detective Special Agent Anthony DiNozzi (Michael Weatherly), former Secret Service Special Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander), goth forensics expert Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), computer specialist and rookie Agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray),(McGee appears in a cameo role 6 episodes in and quickly becomes a reoccuring character. By season 2 he is a full timer) and quirky coroner Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum).Cote de Pablo as former Mossad agent/newly-minted Special Agent Ziva David. Each actor does an exceptional job developing their character, especially Perrette who makes Abby one of the best and most intriguing characters on TV.

LAW AND ORDER
From its gritty documentary look to its signature note-knocking “tching-tching” that signals scene changes, Law & Order was a groundbreaking cop show when it debuted in 1990. It has since earned Emmys for Best Dramatic Series and spun off satellite franchises, and reruns of the original series are as omnipresent in syndication as those of I Love Lucy. Devoted fans and those who came late to the series can catch it from the beginning with this six-disc set that contains all 22 episodes from the inaugural season. Law & Order is television’s most resilient series. It has survived wholesale changes to its ensemble. One of the secrets of the show’s durability: its compelling structure. The first half of each hour-long episode is classic police procedural in which “Law,” personified in the first season by partners Greevey (George Dzundza–and be sure to catch the interview segment with series creator Dick Wolfe to learn how to pronounce his name) and Mike Logan (Christopher Noth, the future “Mr. Big” on Sex and the City) investigate a crime and make an arrest. The second half chronicles the ensuing trial, as prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty) and Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) under the supervision of Steven Hill’s Adam Schiff (more feisty and animated here than in later seasons). Law & Order is also distinguished by its superb writing. Several episodes take their inspiration from the headlines, including “By Hooker, By Crook” about a socialite-run call-girl ring, and “Indifference,” which recalls the tragic Lisa Steinberg child abuse case. Others deal with such hot-button issues as abortion (“Life Choice”) and AIDS (“The Reaper’s Helper”). Another plus is the talent pool of character actors who lend their verisimilitude. Guest stars include Samuel L. Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Violence of Summer”), The West Wing’s John Spencer (“Prescription for Death”), Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon (“Subterranean Homeboy Blues”), and The Sopranos’ Dominic Chianese (“Sonata for Stolen Organ”). –Donald Liebenson

LAW AND ORDER SVU
From the popular and award-winning Law & Order franchise comes Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. This hard-hitting and emotional series chronicles the exciting cases of the NYPD s Special Victims Unit as they try to crack the city s most heinous crimes. With a celebrated cast that includes Christopher Meloni (Twelve Monkeys TV s Oz) Mariska Hargitay (Lake Placid TV s ER) Dan Florek (Beautiful Joe The Flintstones) Richard Belzer (Jump TV s Homicide: Life on the Street) Dean Winters (TV s Oz) and Michelle Hurd (Random Hearts) and featuring such notable guest stars as Angie Harmon (TV s Law & Order) Jerry Orbach (TV s Law & Order) Andrew McCarthy (St. Elmo s Fire Pretty in Pink) Bebe Neuwirth (TV s Frasier Cheers) and Camryn Manheim (TV s The Practice) Law & Order: Special Victims Unit The First Year is a must-have DVD collection

THE WALKING DEAD
After waking from a coma in an abandoned hospital, police officer Rick Grimes finds the world he knew gone – ravaged by a zombie epidemic of apocalyptic proportions. Nearby, on the outskirts of Atlanta, a small encampment struggles to survive as ‘the dead’ stalk them at every turn. Can Rick and the others hold onto their humanity as they fight to live in this terrifying new world? And, amidst dire conditions and personal rivalries, will they ultimately survive one another? AMC’s The Walking Dead is an epic, survival adventure series from the director of The Shawshank Redemption and the producer of The Terminator and Aliens.

BONES
Good to see Bones: The Complete First Season is out on dvd. I’ve waited for this. Debuting in September 2005 on the Fox Network, Bones very quickly garnered rave reviews and amassed a loyal following. Bones is loosely inspired by real life forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs. This funny, clever, sometimes gross, and totally addictive crime drama centers around forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperence Brennan (Emily Deschanel), who toils out of the Jeffersonian Institution and, on the side, writes mysteries starring her fictional heroine (and here’s the twist) Kathy Reichs. Because Brennan has an almost supernatural ability to generate accurate assumptions based on her examination of the corpse’s bones, she is often consulted by the FBI on difficult, seemingly unsolvable cases. She is frequently partnered by brash wiseacre FBI Special Agent Seely Booth (David Boreanaz), who seems to hold a bias against science and those who practice in that field. It’s Booth who breezily saddles Brennan with the nickname “Bones.” Naturally intuitive and freewheeling, Booth immediately is at odds with the clinically analytical Brennan. But, despite their personality clashes, and with the aid of Brennan’s gifted and quirky colleagues, the cases do get solved.

HOUSE
Go deeper into the medical mysteries of House, TV’s most compelling new drama, as all 22 Season One episodes and exclusive bonus features come to DVD! Hugh Laurie stars as the brilliant, but sarcastic Dr. Gregory House, a maverick physician who is devoid of bedside manner. While his behavior can border on antisocial, Dr. House thrives on the challenge of solving the medical puzzles that other doctors give up on. Together with his hand-picked team of young medical experts, he’ll do whatever it takes in the race against the clock to solve the case. Check out each gripping episode featuring some of TV’s hottest guest stars, including Carmen Electra, Chi McBride, Scott Foley and Sela Ward. It’s the intriguing new series TV Guide’s Matt Roush hails as “… the uncommon cure for the common medical drama.”

Criminal Minds
BAU team’s secrets. Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) has a story arc that is the highlight and gives you some of her international-spy back story, as well as a new secret for J.J. (A.J. Cook) and Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) to share. Episodes that focus on Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) are always the bright spot of Criminal Minds, and it’s hard not to wish that his secret weren’t explored more in depth, but perhaps the creators are leaving that arc for season seven. We also get the introduction of a new character, Ashley Seaver (Rachel Nichols), whose father just happens to be a serial killer. David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) is a bit in the background for season six, but maybe it’s because he’s been at the center of previous seasons. Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan is always nice to look at, but remains the least interesting character in the cast–even his “secret” isn’t very compelling–though it is always good to see him interacting with Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), who has an appropriately lighthearted secret of her own. Overall, this is a strong season–and even if you’re not a longtime fan, it’s an easy show to just jump into. Extras include deleted scenes and some fun behind-the-scenes looks at the Paget Brewster arc, the season as a whole, and how various crime scenes are created. You may think your next-door neighbor is a serial killer after watching a whole season, but that’s just a delightful side effect of Criminal Minds
